Artificial intelligence chatbots are increasingly integrated into business functions, potentially evolving into “digital workers.” Lattice, a human resources technology provider, introduced this concept, envisioning AI agents with employee profiles, trained and managed like human employees. This approach aims for responsible AI workforce integration, with transparency and accountability.

The idea sparked mixed reactions, with some viewing it as disrespectful to human workers. Lattice CEO Sarah Franklin acknowledged the backlash and stated that while discussions on responsible AI use will continue, the company will not pursue digital workers further.

AI chatbots, or digital workers, are designed to autonomously perform tasks, improving efficiency and allowing human workers to focus on strategic activities. In HR, AI can streamline recruitment, manage employee records, handle payroll, and provide self-service options, enhancing overall productivity.

Concerns about AI replacing jobs persist, with predictions of significant job displacement. AI’s integration raises questions about its impact on employment and values, highlighting the ongoing ethical and practical challenges. A Goldman Sachs report predicted major workforce disruptions, and surveys indicate many businesses have already begun replacing staff with AI, with further job cuts anticipated.
