AI Progress // isn’t stuck

The progress is unstoppable, the question is — the progress in what?

The recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have sparked both excitement and concern. While AI has made tremendous progress in specific tasks, such as playing chess and generating text, the idea of artificial general intelligence (AGI) — AI that can perform at or above human levels on a wide variety of tasks — has raised eyebrows. Some experts, including Elon Musk, claim that AGI is just around the corner, while others are more skeptical. But what does the future of AI really hold?

Despite the hype, the current state of AI is far from perfect. AI algorithms are prone to errors and “hallucinations,” where they make up information or answers. For example, a recent test of Google’s AI search tool revealed that it provided inaccurate and even disturbing responses to certain queries. This lack of reliability is a major concern, especially if we’re considering using AI in critical areas such as law and medicine. Moreover, the problem of AI hallucinations may not be solvable, at least not with the current technology.

The development of AGI also raises questions about the impact on employment. Many people worry that AI will take over jobs, but this concern is largely unfounded. In reality, AI is likely to make certain tasks more efficient, freeing up human workers to focus on higher-level tasks. Moreover, the availability of low-cost, open-source AI tools means that companies are unlikely to spend millions of dollars on AI systems to replace their workforce. Instead, AI is likely to augment human capabilities, making us more productive and efficient.

However, there are areas where AI does pose a concern. One major issue is bias. AI systems tend to adopt human biases when trained on human data, and we have yet to find a way to fix this problem. This means that AI may perpetuate existing social and economic inequalities, which is a major concern. We need to be aware of these biases and work to address them before relying too heavily on AI systems.

Ultimately, the future of AI is complex and multifaceted. While it’s unlikely that AI will take over civilization anytime soon, it’s clear that AI will play a major role in shaping our world. By understanding the limitations and potential of AI, we can harness its power to augment human capabilities and improve our lives. And if worst comes to worst, we can always just turn it off — a reassuring thought in a world where AI can sometimes seem overwhelming.
