Can an intelligent system make $1M // AI-powered economy
“My new Turing test would see if AI can make $1 million” -Mustafa Suleyman
A growing number of startups are working towards creating fully autonomous, AI-powered companies with no human employees. The concept relies on the development of AI agents that can perform tasks independently, eliminating the need for human intervention.
These AI agents, such as “Alice” developed by London-based startup 11x, are designed to handle specific job functions, like outbound sales development.
11x says it’s currently got 50 paying customers and an even longer waitlist of companies who are interested in employing its digital workers. But despite the early appetite, Sukkar says that Alice and her AI teammates do still have some shortcomings.
While there is increasing interest and early success in deploying these digital workers, challenges remain, including issues like “hallucination” where AI models produce inaccurate or unintended outputs. Cost is also a limiting factor for widespread adoption due to the resource-intensive nature of running powerful AI models.
Despite these challenges, startups like Honu in London aim to create company-wide systems that can control various AI agents, contributing to the vision of fully automated, profitable businesses.
Some predict that by the next year, the first fully autonomous, profitable business, possibly a small ecommerce company, could emerge. This trend raises questions about the societal impact, potential job displacement, and the nature of businesses in an AI-powered economy.
AI agents are reshaping business by doing tasks without constant human guidance, but they face challenges like “hallucination” and high costs.
Startups like 11x and Honu are leading the way in creating autonomous companies, with predictions of fully automated profitable businesses in the near future.
While AI agents may reduce some jobs, they also make entrepreneurship more accessible, raising questions about the kind of businesses society wants in an AI-driven economy.
The concept of an AI-driven economy is promising, but it is still in its early stages. Let’s observe its development and actively participate in building a new and better future.
