Intentional creation: consume, critique, curate, create.
The 4 Cs of creativity:
- Consume: Turn passive consumption into active research. Be intentional about what you consume and reflect on it critically.
- Critique: Capture your reactions and critique what you consume. Research no faster than you can react.
- Curate: Curate your critiques into collections that become reservoirs of creative reference.
- Create: Return to your curations to discover creative paths forward. Creation often happens by making connections between curated ideas.
Benefits of intentional creation:
- Documents influences and makes it easier to involve others.
- Invites collaboration with other creators.
- Provides self-awareness — if critiques don’t lead to new ideas, you may need to adjust what you’re consuming.
Practical tips:
- Spend less time passively consuming, more time taking notes and building your own knowledge base.
- Focus on your interests, not just trending content.
- Close the gap between you and your creative goals.
The key is balancing the 4 Cs — don’t get stuck just consuming. Critique, curate and create.
